The MSI, or Microtech Standard Issue, is the latest in our collection of manual folders. Designed for heavy-duty use, this piece combines utility and style. The blade is made of M390MK Steel, which was produced especially for Microtech, and the handle features a RAM-LOK Bar Lock and our Iconic X Button on both sides. The high-strength handle contains hardened steel liner plates, which gives the knife its rigidity. Complete with a titanium backspacer and reversible pocket clip for left-hand carry.

I love everything about it except the pocket clip. I own several variants of the MSI; when it comes to finishes and colorways, the knife is like Baskin-Robbins’ 31 flavors: something for everyone. M390MK steel strikes a superb balance between edge holding, toughness, corrosion resistance, and ability to resharpen. Microtech also has the possibly the best single-side serration grind in the production knife game, and an overall usable factory edge from the box second to none.
I think that the only thing that could be improved is the pocket clip. I like the Chris Reeve-style secondary detent machined into it. I like the reversibility. I just find a great deal of difference from knife to knife in the clip tension, even from the factory. Moreover, on the heavier versions the weight of the knife versus the clip leaves something to be desired. Polymer’s about 4.5 oz., but you’re near 6 oz. in aluminum scales, closer to 7 oz. in titanium. That’s my only gripe with it.
Also, not a complaint, but as I like both the plain edge and fully serrated, and use each for different tasks, it’d be cool to see the plain/half/full offering on all versions released.
I’ll start off by saying the Red Aluminum MSI is fantastic. No complaints there. For some reason I am not able to review the other MSI, Tan(210-10FLGTTA). I was instead sent a black MSI in place of the Tan. I ordered these through the service personnel program and when I went back to check that page, those knives are no longer options to buy. Not sure if more people had issues with this but kind of disappointing. To end on a positive note the quality and craftsmanship of these knives are amazing and I would recommend Microtech to anyone looking for a solid knife.
