Microtech OTF Maintenance: Cleaning and Caring tips for your EDC
Share
Microtech OTF (Out-the-Front) knives are renowned for their precision craftsmanship and reliability, making them exceptional everyday carry (EDC) tools. Whether you own a Microtech Ultratech®, Combat Troodon®, or any other OTF, consistent maintenance is essential to ensure optimal performance. Most common issues, such as slow deployment or blade sticking, stem from debris buildup in the chassis. With the right tools and techniques, you can keep your Microtech OTF in excellent condition. This guide provides a professional approach to basic cleaning and detailed disassembly, supported by model-specific YouTube tutorials to assist you through the process.
Tools Required for Microtech OTF Maintenance
- Brake parts cleaner or gun scrubber: Effectively removes dirt and grime.
- Rem oil or light lubricant: Maintains smooth operation and prevents corrosion.
- Compressed air (canned or from a compressor): Clears debris and excess cleaner.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): Use gloves, safety glasses, and a mask if you’re sensitive to cleaning agents for added safety.
Step 1: Basic Cleaning for Your Microtech OTF
For routine maintenance, you can often address minor issues without disassembling your knife. Follow these steps:- Prepare the Knife: Deploy the blade into a soft surface, such as a roll of paper towels, to place it in a “neutral state” where the blade can freely move.
- Remove Debris: Use compressed air to spray through the chassis holes near the glass breaker and the blade opening. This quick action can dislodge dust, lint, or small particles.
- Test Performance: Reset the blade by hitting the base of the knife (glass breaker) on a solid surface. Check the deployment. If it remains inconsistent, proceed to a more thorough cleaning.
Step 2: Deep Cleaning Your Microtech OTF
When basic cleaning isn’t enough, a deeper approach is required:- Prepare the blade again by deploying it into a soft surface and placing it in a “neutral state.”
- Apply Cleaner: With the knife in the neutral state, hold it tip-down and away from you. Spray brake parts cleaner or gun scrubber into the chassis through the holes near the glass breaker. Flip the knife and spray through the blade opening, taking care around the sharp edge.
- Dry the Chassis: Use compressed air to remove the cleaner and dry the internals thoroughly.
- Lubricate: Apply Rem oil or a similar light lubricant into the chassis. Grab the end of the blade carefully and cycle several times to distribute the oil, then use compressed air to remove any excess.
Step 3: Disassembling Your Microtech OTF
If problems persist, debris may be lodged deeper within the chassis, requiring disassembly. While this task can be challenging, it’s a manageable process you can perform yourself with proper guidance. The steps vary depending on your model. Some, like the Luminary™, feature hidden chassis screws, while others, like the Ultratech®, have exposed screws. To assist you, we’ve provided three YouTube tutorials below, each detailing the complete process—disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, and reassembly—for specific Microtech models. These professional tutorials offer clear, step-by-step instructions to help you successfully maintain your knife.
Before disassembling your Microtech OTF, consider the following:
- Reassembly Challenges: If you’re unable to reassemble the knife, you can send it to us for assistance, though a fee will apply.
- Lost Parts: If components like screws or springs are misplaced, we don’t replace them free of charge or ship them individually. You’ll need to send your knife in for repair, which incurs a cost.
- Damaged Chassis: Stripping chassis screws during reassembly is irreparable and requires part replacement at an additional expense.
